If nothing being used then it displays your speed & as below when using the scroll wheel. If using Navigation then it shows route guidance, if using media/radio it will display that by pressing the scroll wheel on the steering wheel. This seems to tally with the symptoms I've seen: 1) it didn't work when I test drove the car; presumably it had been there a couple of weeks and only done stop start journeys. 2) worked fine when I picked the car up and for the first week. 3) did a couple of stop start journeys (e.g. moving the car a couple meters along the road its parked on The HUD brightness can be adjusted in the display options menu.
